TEAM-BUILDING

Creating a high performing team takes time

But now, teams don't have the luxury of extended periods in which to develop effective team dynamics

Members need processes to resolve disruptive issues in the team fabric. This is most evident in project teams where the members are expected to merge and create a motivating team dynamic at the same time as they are expected to deliver on the project.
At StrategyWorks we distinguish between:
  • Team Development where teams learn new hard or soft skills for working together. This may also include strategy setting or planning which provides a focus for the renewed energy
  • Team Building in which members reflect on how well they are working together, surfacing and dealing with obstacles in their dynamic
  • Team Bonding where the team embarks on an adventure or a fun activity which allows them to support each other in a new way. These interventions can be effective in bringing teams together but if underlying dynamics are not addressed the effects can be short lived.  We sometimes contract with adventure operators to include exciting elements to team building interventions.  Paddling down a river is an excellent way to release the stress associated with a robust conversation
  • Self Mastery in which the members receive input to develop their own unique skills and talents

Putting it together

A successful team intervention may include elements from each of these activities. It is often a good idea to include team bonding or team building activities in a strategy intervention.  And a team bonding exercise provides an excellent opportunity for open discussion on the culture in the team or organisation.
